Can-Am heavy steering: DPS power steering fault
Teilen
Applies to: Outlander, Maverick, Defender with DPS (Can-Am), DPS models
Symptoms
- Steering suddenly heavy
- DPS warning on the dash
- Intermittent assist, worse at low battery
Why it happens
The DPS unit needs full system voltage, so a weak battery, a corroded DPS connector or a bad main ground cuts assist. Less often, the unit itself fails.
How to fix it
- Test the battery and charging voltage.
- Inspect the DPS connector and main ground for water and corrosion; clean and grease.
- Read fault codes (dash or dealer tool).
- Check steering for binding at tie rods and ball joints.
- Replace the DPS unit only if codes confirm it.
Tools and parts
- Multimeter
- Dielectric grease
- Contact cleaner
