Harley not charging: stator failure
Teilen
Applies to: Twin Cam models (Harley-Davidson), 1999–2017
Symptoms
- Battery drains while riding
- Voltmeter reads low
- Lights dim at idle
Why it happens
The stator windings break down with heat, or the stator plug burns, so AC output drops.
How to fix it
- Check charging voltage at 2000–3000 rpm.
- Unplug the stator and inspect for burnt pins.
- Measure stator resistance and AC output against the manual.
- Test the regulator; replace whichever fails.
Tools and parts
- Multimeter
- Stator
- Regulator
What the factory service manual covers
Charging system: stator AC output per 1000 rpm, resistance spec. The full procedure, specs and wiring diagrams are in the factory service manual for your machine.
