Honda Shadow hard to start after storage: carb and fuel

Applies to: Honda Shadow VT750, VT1100 and other carbureted cruisers

Symptoms

  • Cranks a long time, won't catch
  • Runs only on choke, pops through the intake
  • Bike sat over winter

Why it happens

Stale fuel varnishes the pilot jets and the fuel can't reach the idle circuit. A weak battery that cranks slowly makes it harder still.

How to fix it

  1. Charge the battery fully.
  2. Drain the float bowls and refill with fresh fuel.
  3. If it still runs only on choke, remove the carbs and clean the pilot jets.
  4. Check the fuel pump and fuel cut relay on models that have them.

Tools and parts

  • Battery charger
  • Carb cleaner
  • Carb gasket kit
