Motorcycle fork leaking oil: dirty or worn fork seal

Applies to: All conventional and USD forks (All brands, Yamaha, Kawasaki), All years

Symptoms

  • Oil ring on the fork tube
  • Oil on the brake caliper
  • Soft or bouncy front end

Why it happens

Dirt gets under the seal lip and lets oil past. A nicked or pitted fork tube ruins new seals.

How to fix it

  1. Clean under the seal lip with a seal cleaning tool; this sometimes stops it.
  2. Check the fork tube for nicks or pitting.
  3. Replace fork seals and dust wipers.
  4. Refill fork oil to the manual's level and weight.
