Vespa PX hard to shift or clutch drags: cable adjustment

Applies to: Vespa PX 125 and 150 (twist-grip gear change)

Symptoms

  • Hard to find gears or neutral
  • Grinds into first, creeps with clutch pulled
  • Gear marks on the grip don't line up

Why it happens

The PX shifts through two cables from the left grip and uses a cable clutch. Stretched or poorly adjusted cables leave gears half-engaged and the clutch dragging.

How to fix it

  1. Set the gear selector cables so neutral lines up with the grip mark, per the manual.
  2. Adjust clutch free play at the lever.
  3. Lube or replace stiff cables.
  4. Check gearbox oil level.

Tools and parts

  • Gear and clutch cables
  • Gearbox oil
  • Wrenches
