Backhoe won't move in forward or reverse: shuttle fluid and filter

Applies to: Case 580 / 590 Super R, John Deere 310 and other power-shuttle backhoes

Symptoms

  • Engages slowly or not at all
  • Drives in one direction only
  • Worse when the machine is warm

Why it happens

The power shuttle runs on clutch pressure. Low fluid, a clogged filter or a faulty direction solenoid drops pressure and the clutch slips.

How to fix it

  1. Check transmission fluid level with the engine running per the manual.
  2. Replace the transmission filter.
  3. Check the forward and reverse solenoids and their connectors.
  4. Test clutch pressure at the test ports against spec.

Tools and parts

  • Transmission fluid per manual
  • Transmission filter
  • Pressure gauge
