Indian Scout running hot in traffic: fan and coolant

Applies to: Indian Scout, Scout Bobber and other liquid-cooled cruisers

Symptoms

  • Temperature climbs in stop-and-go traffic
  • Fan runs constantly or not at all
  • Heat on the rider's legs

Why it happens

At low speed the bike relies on its fan. A failed fan, fan relay or sensor, low coolant or a radiator full of bugs lets it overheat.

How to fix it

  1. Check coolant level with the engine cold.
  2. Clean bugs and debris from the radiator.
  3. Confirm the fan switches on at the manual's temperature.
  4. Test the fan relay and coolant temperature sensor.

Tools and parts

  • Coolant
  • Multimeter
  • Soft brush
