Suzuki GSX-R battery not charging: regulator and stator plug

Applies to: Suzuki GSX-R750, GSX-R1000 and other Suzuki sportbikes

Symptoms

  • Battery flat after rides
  • Dim lights, slow cranking
  • Melted or brown stator connector

Why it happens

The regulator/rectifier runs hot and the stator connector between them burns. Once the connection fails the battery stops charging.

How to fix it

  1. Check charging voltage at about 5000 rpm against the manual.
  2. Inspect the stator-to-regulator connector for burnt pins.
  3. Test stator resistance and AC output.
  4. Replace the regulator and bypass the burnt connector with soldered joints.

Tools and parts

  • Multimeter
  • Regulator/rectifier
  • Solder and heat shrink
