WaveRunner loses top speed or cavitates: clogged pump intake

Applies to: Yamaha WaveRunner VX, GP1800R and all jet-pump PWCs
Symptoms
- Engine revs high but the ski is slow
- Cavitation, loss of grip in turns
- Vibration or rattle from the pump
Why it happens
Weeds, rope or a plastic bag wrap around the impeller or block the intake grate. Sucking up gravel chips the impeller and wear ring.
How to fix it
- Shut down, tilt or beach the ski and clear the intake grate.
- Use the cleanout access to remove debris from the impeller.
- Inspect impeller blades and the wear ring clearance.
- Replace a chipped impeller or worn wear ring per the manual.
