Yamaha 4WD won't engage: On-Command motor and wiring

Applies to: Yamaha Viking, Wolverine, Rhino, Grizzly and Kodiak with On-Command 4WD

Symptoms

  • 4WD light comes on but front wheels don't drive
  • Diff lock won't engage
  • Works intermittently, often after washing or water crossings

Why it happens

The front diff gear motor or its connector corrodes, or a switch or wire fails. Sometimes the shift fork just needs the machine rolled slightly to line up.

How to fix it

  1. Roll the machine a few feet after selecting 4WD.
  2. Check the fuse and the connector at the front diff motor for water and corrosion.
  3. Test voltage to the motor while switching 4WD on and off.
  4. Replace the gear motor or switch if voltage is good but nothing moves.

Tools and parts

  • Multimeter
  • Dielectric grease
  • Gear motor or switch
