Youth ATV won't start or runs slow: carb, kill switch and speed limiter

Applies to: Arctic Cat 90, Alterra 90, DVX 90 and other youth ATVs

Symptoms

  • Won't start after sitting
  • Starts but only crawls
  • Dies when warm

Why it happens

Youth ATVs have a tiny carb that clogs fast with stale fuel, a tether or kill switch that's easy to leave off, and a throttle limiter screw that caps speed.

How to fix it

  1. Check the tether and kill switch are set to run.
  2. Drain old fuel and clean the carb's pilot jet.
  3. Clean or replace the spark plug and air filter.
  4. Check the throttle limiter screw setting in the manual before adjusting.

Tools and parts

  • Carb cleaner
  • Spark plug
