Arctic Cat Prowler or Alterra no 4WD: front diff actuator

Applies to: Arctic Cat Prowler, Alterra and other Arctic Cat 4x4s

Symptoms

  • 4WD switch on but front wheels don't pull
  • 4WD light flickers or stays off
  • Front end engages only sometimes

Why it happens

The front differential actuator, its connector or the 4WD switch fails, often from water and mud getting into the connector.

How to fix it

  1. Check the 4WD fuse.
  2. Unplug the actuator connector, clean it and check for corrosion.
  3. Test for voltage at the actuator when 4WD is switched on.
  4. Replace the switch if no voltage, or the actuator if voltage is good but it doesn't move.

Tools and parts

  • Multimeter
  • Dielectric grease
  • Actuator or switch
