ATV wheel wobble or grinding: worn wheel bearing

Applies to: All (All brands, Polaris, Yamaha, Honda), All years

Symptoms

  • Wheel rocks top to bottom
  • Grinding or humming that rises with speed
  • Uneven tire wear

Why it happens

Water and mud get past the bearing seals and rust the bearing.

How to fix it

  1. Jack the wheel off the ground.
  2. Rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock; play here usually means bearing.
  3. Rock at 3 and 9; play here points to tie rods.
  4. Press out and replace the bearing and seals.
  5. Torque the hub nut to the manual spec.
