Backhoe won't move in forward or reverse: shuttle fluid and filter
Share
Applies to: Case 580 / 590 Super R, John Deere 310 and other power-shuttle backhoes
Symptoms
- Engages slowly or not at all
- Drives in one direction only
- Worse when the machine is warm
Why it happens
The power shuttle runs on clutch pressure. Low fluid, a clogged filter or a faulty direction solenoid drops pressure and the clutch slips.
How to fix it
- Check transmission fluid level with the engine running per the manual.
- Replace the transmission filter.
- Check the forward and reverse solenoids and their connectors.
- Test clutch pressure at the test ports against spec.
Tools and parts
- Transmission fluid per manual
- Transmission filter
- Pressure gauge
