Can-Am heavy steering: DPS power steering fault

Applies to: Outlander, Maverick, Defender with DPS (Can-Am), DPS models

Symptoms

  • Steering suddenly heavy
  • DPS warning on the dash
  • Intermittent assist, worse at low battery

Why it happens

The DPS unit needs full system voltage, so a weak battery, a corroded DPS connector or a bad main ground cuts assist. Less often, the unit itself fails.

How to fix it

  1. Test the battery and charging voltage.
  2. Inspect the DPS connector and main ground for water and corrosion; clean and grease.
  3. Read fault codes (dash or dealer tool).
  4. Check steering for binding at tie rods and ball joints.
  5. Replace the DPS unit only if codes confirm it.

Tools and parts

  • Multimeter
  • Dielectric grease
  • Contact cleaner
