Honda Shadow hard to start after storage: carb and fuel
Share
Applies to: Honda Shadow VT750, VT1100 and other carbureted cruisers
Symptoms
- Cranks a long time, won't catch
- Runs only on choke, pops through the intake
- Bike sat over winter
Why it happens
Stale fuel varnishes the pilot jets and the fuel can't reach the idle circuit. A weak battery that cranks slowly makes it harder still.
How to fix it
- Charge the battery fully.
- Drain the float bowls and refill with fresh fuel.
- If it still runs only on choke, remove the carbs and clean the pilot jets.
- Check the fuel pump and fuel cut relay on models that have them.
Tools and parts
- Battery charger
- Carb cleaner
- Carb gasket kit
