Kawasaki Mule diesel dies under load: fuel filter and water

Applies to: Kawasaki Mule 4010 and other diesel Mules

Symptoms

  • Runs at idle but stumbles or dies under load
  • Loses power on hills, then recovers
  • Hard starting after sitting

Why it happens

A clogged fuel filter or water in the separator starves the injection pump. Diesel bought in small amounts and stored in cans often carries water and dirt.

How to fix it

  1. Drain the water separator until clean fuel runs.
  2. Replace the fuel filter.
  3. Bleed air from the fuel system per the manual.
  4. If it keeps happening, drain the tank and check the pickup screen.
