Polaris won't crank: bad brake pressure switch
Share
Applies to: Ranger, RZR, General, ACE, Xpedition (Polaris), ≈2010–2024
Symptoms
- Dash powers up but the engine won't crank
- Brake lights don't come on, or need a hard press
- Pumping the pedal sometimes lets it start
- Intermittent, gets worse over time; no dash codes
Why it happens
The brake pressure switch on the master cylinder is part of the start interlock. When its contacts wear or corrode, the ECU thinks the brake isn't pressed and blocks the starter.
How to fix it
- Check the brake lights. If they don't light with the pedal down, suspect the switch.
- Unplug the switch connector and bridge the two terminals with a paper clip. If it starts, the switch circuit is the fault.
- Clean the connector and add dielectric grease. Sometimes this alone fixes it.
- Replace the switch. On 2018–19 Rangers, owners report part 4014225 (pigtail style) is more reliable than 4014262.
- Bleed the brakes if your model needs it.
Tools and parts
- Paper clip / jumper wire
- Dielectric grease
- Brake pressure switch (e.g. 4014225)
- Brake fluid
