Sled won't start after sitting: flooded or stale fuel
Share
Applies to: Mainly carbureted 2-strokes (Polaris, Ski-Doo, Arctic Cat, Yamaha), All years, mostly pre-EFI
Symptoms
- Won't fire on the first start of the season
- Strong fuel smell; wet plugs
- Runs briefly on starting fluid, then dies
Why it happens
Stale fuel loses its light ends and won't light in a cold cylinder; over-choking floods the plugs; a cold battery cranks weakly; varnish may be partly blocking the carb jets.
How to fix it
- Clear a flood: kill switch off, throttle wide open, crank 10–15 times.
- Dry or replace the plugs and reinstall.
- Drain old fuel and refill fresh, ideally ethanol-free, with stabilizer.
- For next season: choke it at shutdown before storage.
Tools and parts
- Plug socket
- Fresh spark plugs
- Fuel stabilizer
- Ethanol-free fuel
