Yamaha outboard won't rev over 2000-3000 rpm: engine protection mode
Share
Applies to: Yamaha F-series four-stroke outboards, F115 to F300
Symptoms
- Engine limited to low RPM with a warning buzzer
- Overheat or oil pressure light on the gauge
- Returns to normal after restart, then limits again
Why it happens
Yamaha's engine protection cuts RPM when it sees overheating, low oil pressure or a sensor fault. Blocked water intakes, a worn impeller or a stuck thermostat are the usual causes.
How to fix it
- Check the tell-tale stream and clear the water intakes.
- Check oil level and condition.
- Read the diagnostic codes with Yamaha diagnostic software.
- Inspect the thermostat and water pump impeller.
Tools and parts
- Water pump kit
- Thermostat
- Engine oil
